Game Days

Games.

Hubby and I pretty much never plays games at home, even though we have several sitting on the shelf.  Why?  Not sure.  We love to play them with my {our!} siblings but we just don't really think about doing it when it's only the two of us.

One evening we had a couple of my little sisters over and hubby broke out Yahtzee.

I'm not sure who ended up having more fun -- him or the girls!

While all this fun was going on at the kitchen table, I was busy making milkshakes, each one with their special-orders of Oreos or Reeses, vanilla or strawberry.  It was great fun to watch them playing, that is until I stopped paying attention to the shake I was blending and sprayed myself, the floor, counter, and packages of candy with a healthy dose of blended ice cream.  Um, yeah.   There was definitely a reason my mom always made me clean up my own messes in the kitchen after I cooked....probably because they were always twice as big as when she cooked.   Maybe even three times bigger.

But moving on. . .

I loved watching the girls giggle and laugh, shaking the dice and counting their points.  And when one of my little sisters beat da hubby?  Yeah, that was pretty funny too.  Some kids just have a knack for games, and she certainly is one of them.  Doesn't matter what it is, she's always on a winning-streak with something.  But then she giggles and blushes when we tease her, and is utterly adorable.

The girls played with our bunny and then we took them to see a local musical.  Such a lovely evening...I love family nights!

Do you have games nights at home?

I Am Woman: see me cry

DISCLAIMER: there were a few tears shed during the writing of this post.

We pray, we make plans, we figure out the long term goals and we come to mutual conclusions.

The one variable: I am female and my husband is not.
This is not a bad thing because God had it planned that way.
Male + Female = God’s design for family.
It also means that although we are in total agreement on decisions, sometimes emotions can get stirred up and the resolve with which you once viewed a situation can become a bit skewed for awhile.

A perfect example of this? Children.

We are of like mind on the timetable for children. We have talked through our decision, sought God on our decision, and are in total agreement on the matter.

However, in the midst of this decision, there are moments when my desire for children wells up inside of me and I find myself placing my hand where a baby-bump should be. It’s not conscious and it often catches me off-guard when it happens. There are quiet moments when a tear will escape my eye as I think of the baby that will (Lord willing!) be in my arms someday.

I find my feet wandering down the baby aisle at Target or taking a detour through the adorable baby clothes department. Oops, how did I get there? Wouldn’t a little girl’s room be so cute in pink polka dots and butterflies, or a boy’s nursery decorated with airplanes and trucks? Get me out of those aisles.

A couple times when we had "scares" I had to take a PG test. When it came back negative my husband would give a sigh of relief and I always ended up shedding a few tears. My dear husband, although he tried, never really understood the tears… He would always asks me quizzically why I’m crying, not understanding this because he knows that we are united on the decision to wait.

I guess there is a part of me that will always be disappointed until the day it comes back "positive." At first the tears shocked me. Why was I crying?

It took me awhile to figure it all out, but in the end the conclusion I came to was that God planned it that way. He designed women to be caregivers, nurturers, and gave us an incredible capacity to love. He created Eve to be “the mother of all living things.” From the beginning of time women cared for what was around them and were made to “mother” things. The more I thought about it, the more sense it made to me of why there is this deep desire to hold our own little one.

There are mornings I wake up startled by my empty arms because our someday–babies had invaded my dreams all night. But I know God’s plan is perfect, and when it’s time, we’ll know that it’s time. I need not worry about the future and the empty arms, for they will be filled when (if) God wants them to be filled.

God created me as a woman, and as such, there are many emotions that surge through me, thoughts that fly fleeting through my brain that may not make much sense. But that’s okay, because it’s who God made me…and I am “fearfully and wonderfully made.” Sometimes it’s just a struggle for me to remember that in the midst of things about myself that I don’t always understand.

A few years ago my mom sent me a poem {posted below} that I kept posted on the wall of my closet. Every time I would get discouraged by my emotions or feel a rush of mothering desires, I would read this poem and be reminded that God made me special and that the things that may be seen by the world as weaknesses are truly strengths. God made us this way to compliment our husbands and to add the nurturing aspect to relationships.

Being a woman is a gift, a beautiful gift, and one I wouldn’t trade for the world. My life does not become complete when I have a child; it is complete the way it is now, because that is how God has it. I choose to be content in His greater plan.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When God created woman, He was working late on the 6th day.

An angel came by and said: “Why spend so much time on that one?”

And the Lord answered “Have you seen all the specifications I have to meet to shape her? She must be washable, but not made of plastic, have more than 200 moving parts which all must be replaceable and she must function on all kinds of food, she must be able to embrace several kids at the same time, give a hug that can heal anything from a bruised knee to a broken heart and she must do all this with only two hands”.

The angel was impressed. “Just two hands….impossible!” And this is the standard model?

“Too much work for one day….wait until tomorrow and then complete her”.

“I will not”, said the Lord. “I am so close to complete this creation, which will be very dear to my heart”.

“She cures herself when sick and she can work 18 hours a day”

The angel came nearer and touched the woman.

“But you have made her so soft, Lord”

“She is soft”, said the Lord “But I have also made her strong. You can’t imagine what she can endure and overcome.”

“Can she think?” the angel asked.

The Lord answered: “Not only can she think, she can reason and negotiate.”

The angel touched the woman’s cheek. “Lord, it seems this creation is leaking! You have put too many burdens on her.”

“She is not leaking….it’s a tear.”

“What’s it for?” asked the angel.

And the Lord said: “Tears are her way of expressing grief, her doubts, her love, her loneliness, her suffering and her pride.”

This made a big impression on the angel; “Lord, you are genius. You thought of everything. The woman is indeed marvelous!”

———————————-

Indeed she is! Woman has strength that amazes man. She can handle trouble and carry heavy burdens. She holds happiness, love and opinions. She smiles when feeling like screaming. She sings when she feels like crying, cries when she is happy and laughs when she is afraid.

She fights for what she believes in and stands up against injustice. She doesn’t take “no” for an answer, when she can see a better solution. She gives of herself so her family can thrive. She takes her friend to the doctor if she is afraid. Her love is unconditional.

She cries when her kids are victorious. She is happy when her friends do well. She is glad when she hears of a birth or a wedding.

Her heart is broken when a next of kin or friend dies. But she finds the strength to get on with life.

She knows that a kiss and a hug can heal a broken heart.

There is only one thing wrong with her – She forgets what she is worth…

Children

Sometimes I am amazed by children -- their ability to see past disabilities, quirks, and even past the “unloveliness” that we as adults are often made awkward by. The hug of a child can light up the faces of those who never smile, and their kind words can warm a lonely heart.

My grandma always used to say that it was us grandkids that “kept her going.” I understand that better now as I observe the impact children have on the older generations. Children bring a joy to life that most other things cannot.

I don’t think God ever intended for there to be such generational-segregation as there is now in society. The older should teach the younger, the younger should learn from and respect the older, and the youngest, well, they’re just delightful and we can all learn a thing or two from them!

My grandma said it was us grandkids that gave her something to live for, but the day she died my heart broke in half.  In His grace and perfect timing, God then brought a child into my life, giving me something else to love. Two days after we buried my grandma, God brought sweet Mary into my family’s arms. Only five weeks old and needing all the love in the world, God used that little angel to start healing the sadness in my heart. Although my grandma never met my baby sister, I always think of them together knowing how much they would have loved each other. I had spent so much time with my grandmother the last couple years of her life, that when she passed, that energy was then poured into the little baby who had much to overcome at such a young age.

That little darling is now 5 ½ and never ceases to bring a laugh & smile to all who are around her. She is so loved and spreads sunshine everywhere she goes. She is without a doubt, the Little Princess.

Come to the Table

Growing up, the dinner table meant “family time.” Our lives were busy and everybody was often headed in various directions, but we always tried to make it home for dinner. Around the table we talked about our day, our plans for the week, grades on a test, news headlines, a sermon at church, something we read, updates on a friend…anything and everything. We laughed, we cried, we spilled milk and we flung mashed potatoes. It was family time; it was the gathering place.

Time around the table isn’t special because the food is always amazing (although that never hurts!) but because it’s a chance to sit down and reconnect for a few minutes no matter how busy the day has been. So many of my memories growing up were centered around the kitchen and the dining room table.

I always look forward to sitting down at the table for dinner with my husband at the end of a long day. Sometimes we are so exhausted that there may only be a dozen words passed between us the entire meal, and other times it takes half an hour to eat a bowl of soup because we have so much to talk about. The point is simply to be together. I love knowing we are both home safely under the same roof, and whether there are many words or few, sitting at our little table is a beautiful thing. Nobody said it has to be fancy; there is no gold trim on those kitchen chairs, no satin cushions, or hand carved scrolling. Sometimes it’s covered with stacks of unopened mail, other times it’s spotless with a decorative candle burning cheerily in the center. But regardless of how it looks on any given day, it’s our table, in our little home, where our memories are being made.

Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Christmas busyness is over and now it’s time to gear-up for our January busyness, which I’m sure ya’ll will be hearing more about in future posts.

Christmas day for us was filled with family festivities, food and fun. Lots of food. My food contributions were sickeningly-sweet White Chocolate Gingerbread bars and Hummus w/ wheat chips. The hummus turned out so good that I’ve been longing for a taste of it ever since. It was my first time making it but now I’m totally hooked and plan on never buying it from the store again.

Mom surprised me “The Pioneer Woman” cookbook, about which I was very excited! Especially since I bought the same cookbook for her birthday back in November and coveted it from the day I ordered it until I unwrapped my very own copy on Friday! I have been pouring over the pretty pages and tantalizing recipes…I can't wait to start cooking!

Ashamedly I must admit, we did not get a single picture on Christmas day (or eve), which will make for a pretty boring page in our 2009 scrapbook. …not that I’ve started our 2009 scrapbook yet, but I will. Really, it’s on my list of things to do…in 2010…and I’m already envisioning how pathetic the holiday section will look because there are no pictures. Maybe I’ll have to resort to buying some cute elf stickers and doodling ribbons and holly around the edges and writing a little poem about how lame it is that we couldn’t manage to get a picture of ourselves around Christmastime that even remotely resembled the look of something festive.

It was a lovely day, and as I recall, I even managed to stay awake for all of it. It was wonderful to have a couple days off from work, spend time with family and just enjoy each other’s company. I am so blessed.

Did you have a good Christmas?

Silent Night. . . Holy Night. . .

Christmas Fun!

“…presents underneath the tree, candles burning bright…stockings hung with lots of care…on this silent Christmas night…”

All our Christmas shopping is finally done as of this morning. Internet shopping = For the Win! Amazon.com has the best deals and it sure beats having to push & shove your way though the crowded stores (not that I’d ever shove, mind you) and wait in insanely long checkout lines.

I can’t believe I haven’t watched any Christmas movies yet this year. Tragic. However, “The Grinch” is an absolute-must before December is over! Little Cindy-Lou Who is completely irresistible and no holiday season is complete without watching Max try to pull the overstocked sleigh or the Grinch sewing his own Santa suit. *sigh* I love animated films.

The holiday festivities for the week include:
  • Tuesday I’ll be going with my husband to his company Christmas party, which I hear will be complete with pizza and Guitar Hero…
  • Christmas Eve is our Christmas together with just the two of us, and then a Christmas Eve service at church, which is always very lovely.

  • Christmas day is split between our two families, which always makes me more thankful that none of us are too far away from each other! Breakfast with his family, supper with mine – always great memories made on that day!
Mom asked me to make hummus for Christmas, so I have to whip up that on Thursday and a Chocolate Chip Cheese Ball for the party on Tuesday. We have a vacation coming up in January so I've been trying not to keep too many sweets in the house this season.  So far so good, although I did splurge on a batch of brownies last week... :)

Are you making any new recipes or anything fun this week?

A Week in the Life

Good morning, bloggers!

This morning I was up early enough to do my devotions before I left for work. Love it! Admittedly I haven’t been nearly as faithful with that as I want to me. I am NOT a morning person, and actually staying UP after my hubby leaves for work doesn’t usually happen. Yes, I get up with him, make sure he has everything he needs for the day, kiss him goodbye when he leaves, and promptly crawl back into bed until I have to start getting ready for work.
But this week I am going to try NOT going back to bed. I’m sure I will still be craving the extra sleep, but I want to start trying to make better use of my time and the hours in my day when I’m actually not in the office.
  •  Good use #1: daily devotions
  • Good use #2: extra gym time
  • Good use #3: catch up on dishes
  • Good use #4: clean bathroom
  • Good use #5: meal prep
  • Good use #6: tidy up house

Those are just a few things that came to mind if I have an extra time before I have to start thinking about getting ready for work. As the Chris Rice lyrics say:
“Every day is a bank account
And time is our currency
So nobody's rich, nobody's poor
We get 24 hours each
So how are you gonna spend
Will you invest, or squander
Try to get ahead
Or help someone who's under
Teach us to count the days
Teach us to make the days count
Lead us in better ways
That somehow our souls forgot
Life means so much

This week I purchased a devotional on Amazon.com called “The Daily Sacrifice”, written by H.A. Ironside, published in 1948.

The daily readings start with a text of Scripture and are followed by a paragraph of insightful expounding. Today I read through the 3rd chapter of Colossians and was reminded that “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”

It is a great blessing to start the day focusing on the Lord, and with His words in my heart & mind.

Tomorrow morning I am going to attempt an early-morning workout at the gym, be headed home by the time I'm usually thinking about getting up, hit the shower, throw on some makeup, grab breakfast, and be out the door in time for work. I’m feeling ambitious at the moment…I only hope that ambition is still there when the alarm is going off at some awful hour and I’m warm & cozy under the blankets while the wind is gusting and the rain is pouring outside. Have to see how that one works out.

Here is a rough outline of my week:
  • Sunday: AM Church, birthday dinner @ the in-laws (Ribs!), PM church
  • Monday: Work, sewing machine shopping w/ Mom, movie (“Julie & Julia”)
  • Tuesday: AM Pilates workout, work, dinner, laundry
  • Wednesday: Work, meet hubby for coffee @ lunch, out for birthday dinner
  • Thursday: Work, dinner
  • Friday: Work, birthday dinner @ my parent’s (Pizza!)
  • Saturday: WEEKEND!!! YAY!!! AM Pilates workout, menu-planning, cleaning, laundry
  • Sunday: 1 year anniversary!!!! Church
Are there any tricks you have learned for getting out of bed early, having daily devotions, or weekly workouts?

Happy Monday, ya’ll.

Have You Forgotten?

Have you forgotten how it felt that day?
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away
Have you forgotten, when those towers fell
We had neighbors still inside
goin’ through a livin’ hell
And you say we shouldn't worry ‘bout Bin Laden
Have you forgotten?
Breakfast was over and I was walking down the hall toward my bedroom… I was 16, just starting my senior year in high school. Suddenly I heard commotion in the family room. People were yelling, I heard the TV running, Mom was gasping in horror. When I looked at the TV, all I saw was flames, terror, and buildings starting to crumble. Then we were all hit with the realization that dad was supposed to be in that building for a 9:00 AM meeting, on the 87th floor. But due to the divine hand of almighty God, his meeting had been canceled on short notice and he was safely working at his office in town. Where were you when the world stopped turning, that September day?

It's the Small Things

Did I mention that when life gets busier, posting on my blog seems to be the first thing to go? Or maybe another reason not to post is that who wants to hear about another long day at work, a sink full of dishes, a dead lawn, another unfinished book, high grocery prices, or another cooking disaster? But really, it’s all the small things that help to make life special. The small things that I would miss if I was spending my waking moments (while not at work), scouring the Internet or writing uninteresting blog posts. Small things, like an impromptu walk in the rain, a late night drive, an unexpected movie & popcorn, or just a quiet conversation that was long overdue. It's rather hard for me to blog about such things. How do you find the words to convey the inner joy and contentment they help to bring into our everyday lives? That being said. . . . Tonight my hubby & I are celebrating my sister’s fifth birthday with my family. There undoubtedly will be great joy around the dinner table…as well as mounds of spaghetti, probably a glass or two of spilled milk, much laughter, and a very happy & adorable birthday girl. Catch ya later folks; I have a party to get to.
